So, the port is not really an issue and some thing weird is going on. When I power off TV overnight, and switch it on the morning, the audio is actually routed through external speakers for about 30 seconds to 1 minute, after which audio switches to playing through TV speakers. One final experiment convinced me it is a firmware issue. Also, my external speakers when plugged in to other devices like phone or laptop. I have connected different headphones to the TV and none of them work. Since the firmware update on Feb 6th or so, the audio plays out of TV speakers even when the external speakers are plugged in through the 3.5mm port on the TV. The setup was working fine, with the audio playing through external speakers (and not TV) when plugged in. The speakers and sub are powered separately. I have a TCL Roku TV and I connect external speakers using a 3.5mm jack. I have a similar issue since the last firmware update.
